New Video Game “Resistance 3″ Features Postapocalyptic St. Louis

without comments

File Front has published a handful of screen shots of the new sci-fi first person shooter video game “Resistance 3.” The game is at least partially set in St. Louis– a St. Louis of the future (or maybe alternate history) which has been devastated by some kind of cataclysmic event and infested with robo-mutant aliens or something.

See below. The Arch is still standing. (So I don’t know why everybody is worried about a little corrosion.)

Here some robotic flying sentries appear to patrol the Old Post Office.

Readers may recall that St. Louis provided the backdrop for John Carpenter’s dystopian sci-fi movie ”Escape From New York.” The director needed burned-out, abandoned blocks of urban decay and St. Louis and East St. Louis (ca. 1981) had an ample supply. “Resistance 3″ is pure fantasy, so I guess we’re making progress!

P.S. I wish I had discovered these images early enough to submit them to the Gateway Arch design competition.

Claire McCaskill appreciates the limits of federal spending, after all

without comments

Sen. Claire McCaskill (D-MO) has no problem spending money we don’t have on porcine stimulus bills that don’t work, unpopular and violative national healthcare bills that don’t curb costs, and perpetual unemployment benefits that don’t create jobs.

But what about paying for improvements to a cherished national monument and civic treasure– a universally-recognized icon of Claire’s home state of Missouri?

Claire’s got just the idea– bake sales!

UPDATE: MikeM writes,

shuckie darns we need more cash? how about a good ol fashin’ ho-down dibberty jibbity doo!

The future is here! And by future, I mean 1892.

without comments

From a New York Times article on Wednesday. Wednesday, June 3, 1892. (Not a joke.)

A HUNDRED MILES AN HOUR; PROMISED RATE OF TRAVEL FROM ST. LOUIS TO CHICAGO. DR. WELLINGTON ADAMS TELLS ELECTRIC CLUB MEMBERS OF A WONDERFUL ELECTRIC RAILROAD — THE SECRET OF HIS MOTORS RETAINED.

The Empire State Express, which flies from New-York to Buffalo, is soon to be entirely eclipsed by an electric express traveling at thunderbolt speed over a road as straight as an arrow’s course, if the story be not a dream which Dr. Wellington Adams unfolded last night to the members of the Electric Club…

WSJ: Health insurance premiums for St. Louis small businesses expected to increase 91% under Obamacare

without comments

The story is largely the same from state to state, though the increases are smaller in the few states that have already adopted the same mandates and regulations that Democrats want to impose on all states. For the average small employer in high-cost New York, for instance, premiums would only rise by 6%. But they’d shoot up by 94% for the same employer in Indianapolis, 91% in St. Louis and 53% in Milwaukee.

A family of four with average health in those same cities would all face cost increases of 122% buying insurance on the individual market. And it’s important to understand that these are merely the new costs created by ObamaCare—not including the natural increases in medical costs over time from new therapies and the like.

Gadsden flag flies over a St. Louis industrial park…

without comments

It’s a gorgeous day here today. Feels like Palo Alto. But because most of the time here it feels like St. Louis, I’d say today feels even better than northern California.

Liberal counter-protester mocks Gadsden flag vendor: “Come on down here, black man.”

without comments

Waiting in line for a Rep. Russ Carnahan (D-MO) town hall event on healthcare the evening of 8/6/09. This woman evidently cannot comprehend how an African-American man could possibly be selling the “Don’t Tread On Me” Gadsden flag along with other conservative and anti-Obama merchandise.

No come on, you’re working for him. Come on down here, black man. I’m serious. You’re– come on, get down here. I know you’re bi-racial, so is he. Get down here.

(We published these clips in August, but they were buried in a longer video and the quality was poor.)
