REASON: Young Libertarians Flaky, Increasingly Republican-Leaning

with one comment

Libertarians are about 14 percent of the electorate. Libertarian voters swung away from Bush and the GOP in 2004 and 2006, but in 2008 they swung back, voting for McCain by 71 to 27 percent.

Younger libertarians voted 59 percent for Obama versus 36 percent for McCain. But their enthusiasm for his policies may be short-lived. Younger Americans are an optimistic generation, but easily shaken when things go badly. If unemployment continues to remain weak, an economic issue that disproportionately affects young people, this generation of voters could quickly become disillusioned with Obama’s policies.

REASON: Laboratories of Repression

without comments

The Windy City would like to “serve as a laboratory” with the “flexibility” to ignore the Second Amendment. But there’s nothing “novel” about that. It’s just another case of the government violating our rights. And since the Supreme Court would never let Chicago ban free speech, establish an official religion, or conduct other “experiments” on the First Amendment, why should the Second Amendment receive any less respect?

It’s time for the Supreme Court to give the entire Bill of Rights its due.

REASON: The Man Who Saved More Human Lives Than Any Other Has Died

without comments

Norman Borlaug, the man who saved more human lives than anyone else in history, has died at age 95. Borlaug was the Father of the Green Revolution, the dramatic improvement in agricultural productivity that swept the globe in the 1960s.

I first learned about Norman Borlaug in this paean from Penn and Teller’s TV show, “Bullshit.”

Peter Schiff on the U.S. becoming an "economic wasteland" (Reason TV)

without comments

This is the first time I’ve seen Peter Schiff when he wasn’t being harangued, ridiculed or shouted down. He turns out to be a very bright man when you give him a chance to speak.

Peter Schiff for Senate 2010.
