Is Healthcare a Right?
We all have passionate feelings about the well-being of our fellow citizens. We don’t want anyone to suffer. We believe that all Americans should have access to healthcare. With that affirmed, let’s now define the terms of our discussion because most certainly the government lawyers will. It needs to be understood that we have rights and needs. Our rights are things that can not be taken from us (unless we break the laws of the land). No one grants us these rights, certainly not the govt. We are born with them. They are naturally derived. We make no claim on anyone to express these rights rather they are actions that we are free to perform without impingement. They include life, liberty, speech, religion and property. This is what the Constitution is about. People have rights. Not the government nor any private group. Needs are different. We may need happiness but the govt can’t give it to us. We need food but you can’t go into the grocery store and take it. We need clothes but don’t try stealing them from Macy’s. We need shelter but you just can’t take an empty house and live in it. It is so with healthcare. We need healthcare, but it is not a right because you do not have the “right” to make a claim against another man for his services. That abridges his rights. Unfortunately, I don’t think that the Constitution is taught very well in our schools, but this is the basis for the foundation of our country.
