Let’s check in with the Sultan of Smug to see how things are going post-MSNBC…

Several of the Journolist contributors were especially put off by Olbermann’s bizarrely, gratuitously vicious assault on Carrie Prejean, the Miss USA contestant who said she believed marriage should be between a man and a woman. (A position shared by such right-wing crypto-fascists as president Barack Obama.) Michael O’Hare, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, wrote,

Odd when a reasonable person’s internal alarm doesn’t go off in a situation like that …’I’m going to ridicule a girl who’s obviously at her personal limits just trying to look conventionally pretty on national TV? What does that make me’?”

But perhaps most damningly, Michael Cohen from the New America Foundation said of Olbermann,

At least [Fox News's Sean] Hannity and [Bill] O’Reilly engage with the other side (if mainly just to yell at them). Olbermann is just an echo chamber.

Keithers must be devastated. If MSNBC can’t find anybody to go on suicide watch because everybody hates him, maybe they can install one of those baby monitors near his bathtub, where a bawling Olbermann is certain to be nestled for the next several weeks.

Oh yeah– as if to compound his misery, now everybody also knows Keith Olbermann was not invited to participate in Journolist. Hundreds of members– journalists, professors, the liberal intellectual elite– and no room for the lockstep ideological cohort who hosts a nightly, primetime show on a major cable news network? (Olbermann must feel betrayed by Journolist contributor and frequent guest on “Countdown With Keith Olbermann,” Chris Hayes.)

Well, Keith finally encountered somebody who will engage him. It is ordinary people: tea partiers, amateur YouTubers and bloggers.

And so far this is going very, very badly for Keith.

Coeur d’Alene, Idaho – Republican leaders from around the country are expressing anxiety about their electoral future in the wake of an announcement by straw men and racists that they will form a third party.

The new movement draws its membership both from angry right-wing extremists who were in recent days bravely and astutely exposed by MSNBC anchor Keith Olbermann to be racists as well as the straw men who have waged an almost daily battle with the White House over President Obama’s progressive agenda.

After an unsuccessful meeting here to attempt to dissuade these key voting blocs from defecting the GOP, a visibly upset House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-Ohio) remarked,

Look, we thought we were going to be able to channel all the irrational anger and racial hatred of the extreme right-wing with the perplexing arguments of the imaginary right-wing to achieve a Republican takeover of Congress this November. That’s looking like a long-shot now that two of the pillars of our party have seen fit to abandon us. Frankly, we are just going to have to rally the base we still have– whether it’s the Nazis, the torture-lovers or the abortion doctor assassins– we need their support now more than ever.

Remember Keith Olbermann?

He was the one-time must-see anti-Bush ranter who helped rescue MSNBC (yes, it’s still on at night) from even worse oblivion years ago.

Well, quietly last month while no one was looking, hardly anyone was watching Keith Olbermann anymore.
