Death to the dictator

without comments

Today the Iranian government organized another “Death to America” protest for the 30th anniversary of the terrorist takeover of the US embassy (clearly a sign they are ready to “sit down at the table”, by the way).  However this year’s protest had an interesting new dimension.  Fox reports:

The contrasts in the latest protest wave were stark: people chanting “Death to America” outside the former U.S. Embassy while hundreds of opposition marchers in central Haft-e-Tir Square denounced President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad with cries of “Death to the Dictator.”

It seems fairly clear that there is a legitimate movement in Iran to break free of the theocratic totalitarian regime.  What is Obama’s response?  Weak, indecisive, and entirely forgettable.

I think a fitting comparison is Ronald Reagan’s response to the Polish Solidarity movement during the 1980’s.  In a radio address on Oct. 9, 1982 he said:

Someone has said that when anyone is denied freedom, then freedom for everyone is threatened. The struggle in the world today for the hearts and minds of mankind is based on one simple question: Is man born to be free, or slave? In country after country, people have long known the answer to that question. We are free by divine right. We are the masters of our fate, and we create governments for our convenience. Those who would have it otherwise commit a crime and a sin against God and man.

This is a statement worthy of American values and boldness.  Poland was a showdown against the full might of the Soviet Union, but Reagan’s message remained clear and unafraid.

Weakness and indecisiveness in the face of a few radical Islamic madmen is shameful.  Has our conciliatory stance gained us any advantage in “negotiations” with Iran?  More importantly, do we no longer have the boldness to stand up for liberty and freedom in the world?

Reagan’s response in 1988 to Iran acting up in the Persian Gulf?  Our navy destroyed 2 oil rigs and 6 Iranian ships.  There is only one appropriate response to violent dictators and repressive regimes.  America must have the boldness and moral clarity to act.  No one else will.

KRAUTHAMMER: Obama's French problem

without comments

Obama actually said [to the U.N. General Assembly], “No one nation can … dominate another nation.” That adolescent mindlessness was followed with the declaration that “alignments of nations rooted in the cleavages of a long-gone Cold War” in fact “make no sense in an interconnected world.” NATO, our alliances with Japan and South Korea, our umbrella over Taiwan, are senseless? What do our allies think when they hear such nonsense?
