BARACK OBAMA (ca. 2004-2007): Democrats should not pass healthcare reform with a simple majority
See below a video compendium of Barack Obama consistently expressing a belief that significant legislation, including healthcare reform, should not be passed with a “fifty-plus-one” strategy.
I wonder how much longer clear instances of hypocrisy like this– repeated, video-captured self-contradiction– will continue to surprise us. It seems to happen all the time– tactics that you previously condemned as overreaching and dangerous become perfectly palatable once your team wins the majority.

Time for a new meme: Segregation!

That line is moving faster than mine. Segregation!
The whole “everything is racist” thing was beginning to lose some steam. Then, today, Senator Tom Harkin gave us all a wonderful gift– the evocation of segregation to decry the variable treatment of different health risks by insurance companies!
I didn’t have any idea how bad the problem was until I started thinking through a typical day…
- McDonald’s wouldn’t serve me an Egg McMuffin at 10:45 this morning because I arrived too late for their breakfast menu. Segregation!
- AT&T customer service made me wait longer than the people who had called in before me. Segregation!
- General Electric would not negotiate with me for the purchase of an aircraft engine, citing the fact that I don’t in any way intend to use it, nor am I wearing pants. Segregation!
One more thing. Don’t bother accusing me of trivializing segregation. Tom Harkin already did that much more effectively than our feckless snark ever could.
HINKLE: Talking Down to the Public Will Surely Work
But him right. Him not explain health care good. Use too many big words. Say too many compound-complex sentences. Confuse American people. American people not want that. American people want simple explanation. Simpler the better.

DOCTOR ZERO: The Context Of Middle-Class Frustration
It’s clear that the middle class is the great enemy of collectivism. Only they have the combination of voting power, money, and economic self-interest to see the growth of government as undesirable, and provide effective resistance. They generally view their interactions with government in a negative light – they’ve all spent time in the Department of Motor Vehicles mausoleum, spent hours wrestling with tax forms, or been slapped with a traffic citation they don’t think they deserved. They understand the inefficiency and emotional instability of government, and instinctively resent its intrusion into their lives. A health-care takeover is the best chance collectivists will ever have of persuading the middle class to vote itself into chains… but for the better part of a century, they’ve been able to hear the hammers of the State ringing on the metal of those chains, in the forges of taxation and regulation.
MARK STEYN: Cross the River, Burn the Bridge
The monstrous mountain of toxic pustules sprouting from greasy boils metastasizing from malign carbuncles that passed the Senate on Christmas Eve is not the last word in “health†“care,†but the first. It ensures that this is all we’ll be talking about, now and forever.
…
Think of the way almost every Big Government project bursts its bodice and winds up bigger and more bloated than its creators allegedly foresaw. In this instance, the stays come pre-loosened, and studded with loopholes. Because the Democrat operators — the Nancy Pelosis and Barney Franks — know that what matters is to get something, anything across the river, and then burn the bridge behind you.
Merry Christmas, America! Here’s a stinker of a bill for you.
That’s craptastic, Time Magazine. Thank you.
From an article titled “Why Obama Has to Worry About Polls” by Michael Scherer.
Something has gone wrong on the long trail to historic health reform. For one thing, Americans no longer support what is going on. The recent Wall Street Journal/NBC poll found that 44% of the country believe it would be better not to pass any plan at all, while 41% said it would be better to pass the plan. As recently as October, the same poll showed those numbers practically reversed. One reason is a misalignment of priorities. The health care debate has, ironically, intensified American contentment with their current health coverage. The July Battleground poll found that 84% of Americans were “satisfied” with their health care. The same poll in December found 91% of Americans satisfied with their health care.
“The health care debate has, ironically, intensified American contentment with their current health coverage.”
Come again?
I guess Michael Scherer wouldn’t think twice about writing something like,
“The jury has, ironically, reached a verdict of ‘not guilty’ in the murder trial of the accused.”
When Americans evaluate a massive new government program that is counterintuitive and being sold as its opposite and these people conclude, “Eh, that sounds like it sucks. I’ll stick with what I’ve got,” that is not ironic. That is a choice. (For the moment, we still have some.)
Organizing for America Health Reform Video Challenge – MISSOURAH.com version
I received David Plouffe’s email at 5:23 PM, and followed the link to the video for the first time at about 6:45. I know that with a few more hours this could be greatly improved, but there’s something about posting a spoof within a few hours of the original…
