Some Spam deserves to be celebrated for its sheer cynical ridiculousness:
You have probably noticed little Facebook “Like” buttons appearing on more and more web sites recently. With the addition of this feature, Facebook is obviously trying to compete with Digg, the popular “social bookmarking”/”social news” site launched in 2004.
Facebook has a considerably larger community than Digg so the “Like” function may very well eclipse the near-ubiquitous Digg button.
But here’s the problem. While Digg can be read as an approving “dig”– e.g. “I dig it, daddy-o”– it is more ambiguous than that. People have come to understand, I think, that Digging does not imply they support the actual news or opinion contained in the Dugg article. Rather, it indicates they they find it newsworthy or curious.
Meanwhile, Facebook’s answer to Digg is the unambiguous “Like.” Look no further than this article from TMZ today to understand how that could go wrong…

I guess Facebook is done screwing around– no more subtly targeted, tastefully composed ads on the margin.
Moments ago, a simple search yielded this clusterfuck of entirely impertinent garbage. I think even MySpace would be ashamed to render a page thusly:

As Frank Rich thoughtfully and accurately notes in his column for the New York Times today, Sarah Palin’s rhetoric about “reloading” and “targeting” Democrats in the November elections is a barely-veiled promise to begin literally shooting politicians with actual guns. I spent a little time browsing Sarah Palin’s Facebook page to see whether she is sending any other dangerous messages…
“Code Red“?! Do you know what’s red? The blood of Sarah Palin’s political opponents! Good God, this woman must be stopped!
“Searchlight“? You know what emits light? The flames of a burning cross! Sarah Palin is a murderous segregationist!
“Censorship“? Hmm… Don’t you mean slave ship?! Who will step up and prevent this rightwing hatemonger from reinstituting the slave trade?!
“Fact-checking the Obamacare Summit”? This self-proclaimed “hockey mom” can’t pretend she doesn’t know the violence implicit in “checking!”
“Get Organized“? You know who else organized? Hitler! When will you people understand that this woman is a genocidal sociopath determined to destroy everything you know and care about!
Among the luminaries advising president Barack Obama on “how to streamline the federal government,”
- Chris Hughes, co-founder of Facebook
- Debra Lee, chairman and CEO of BET
- John Riccitiello, CEO of Electronic Arts
- Jeffrey Jordan, CEO of OpenTable
- Jeremy Stoppelman, CEO of Yelp
I’d like to submit the very first review to the amazing social networking/gaming/entertainment/dining portal that Obama seems intent on building (OpenFaceYelp.gov?)
Barack Obama approaches everything like he’s a popular professor conducting a symposium on “Big Ideas.” On a scale of five stars (*****):
- Charisma: **
None of this should be very surprising. President Obama has, after all, sought counsel from terminally pre-revenue Twitter on job creation. (I’m serious, even though the link is to a satirical article.)
