Bill Whittle: “They Stole Our Future, But They Cannot Break Our Will”

without comments

Another excellent installment of “Afterburner,” in which Bill Whittle wistfully recalls his visit to GM’s Futurama exhibit at the World’s Fair in New York City in 1964.

I feel something similar for Disney’s Tomorrowland (probably heir to Futurama), but the nostalgia is balanced out to some degree by a sense of parallel-world eeriness.

(I’m still looking for a great word for “nostalgia for a future envisioned in the past,” but I enjoyed this piece from the Atlantic’s Word Fugitives from a few years back– October 2001, as it turns out– curiously apropos.)

After “Old Dogs” Movie Viewing, Embarrassed Disney Executives Plan To Raze Studios, Cease Filmmaking Permanently

without comments

After viewing the final cut of the Robin Williams and John Travolta feature “Old Dogs,” Walt Disney Company CEO Robert Iger and other senior executives announced that they plan to raze their studio and production facilities and permanently cease making motion pictures. Iger read from a statement:

With great humility, we ask each of our treasured fans to accept our apology for the creation of a movie so cretinous that the only adequate remedy is to completely cease all of our filmmaking operations and burn our facilities to the ground. No Disney fan will ever have to worry about another “Old Dogs.”
