Is Hillary Clinton the fulcrum around which turns the fate of the Korean Peninsula? Probably not, but unfortunately it doesn’t seem as impossible as one might think. Elections matter. Appointments to Secretary of State matter, and using that office as a political consolation prize may not have been the best thing for our country.
North Korea is now threatening nuclear response to our joint military exercises with South Korea tomorrow. It is also important to note that North Korea torpedoed and sank a South Korean ship earlier this year, killing 46.  Reflecting on that fact for a second, it becomes alarmingly clear that that is in fact already an act of war.
So how much of North Korea’s tough talk is the bluster of a dying dictator? Does anyone know, with enough certainty to risk a US carrier group, or perhaps the South Korean capitol of Seoul? Perhaps Kim Jong Il is getting old and would like to go out with a bang, and has surrounded himself with enough psychopaths to really give it a shot.
In any case ultimately we can’t blame crazy dictators for being crazy dictators. Until human society is somehow perfected they will always be around, and throwing a wrench in the delicate balance of international relations is just what they do – along with building yachts made of pure gold and ordering 10,000 pairs of diamond tipped cowboy boots while their people starve – such is their nature. What we can control is our response to them. Kim Jong Il and his Iranian counterpart have little to fear from Obama’s apologies, diplomatic initiatives, and seemingly boundless desire for detente. I suspect that strongly worded resolutions from the UN do not haunt the dreams of dictators at night.
On the other end of the spectrum is Reagan’s response to Iranian agression in 1987. It is now largely forgotten, likely due to its success in solving the problem posed by the Iranians. Iranians acting up? Sink their navy. Problem solved. Agressors must be put in their place. Negotiations are nice if we need something from France — not if we need to deter a nuclear armed madman.
I certainly hope that North Korea’s threats are nothing but hot air intended to test Obama’s resolve. And I hope that for once he can find some. Maybe he would even consider taking some time off from his domestic agenda and agressive vacation schedule to act like the President of the United States. Probably too much to ask.
Moments ago at Drudge Report–
The Daily Caller reports that members of the left-wing discussion group Journolist think Keith Olbermann is a “predictable,” “unfunny,” “misogynistic,” “pompous,” “shtiky and rude blowhard.”
Several of the Journolist contributors were especially put off by Olbermann’s bizarrely, gratuitously vicious assault on Carrie Prejean, the Miss USA contestant who said she believed marriage should be between a man and a woman. (A position shared by such right-wing crypto-fascists as president Barack Obama.) Michael O’Hare, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, wrote,
Odd when a reasonable person’s internal alarm doesn’t go off in a situation like that …’I’m going to ridicule a girl who’s obviously at her personal limits just trying to look conventionally pretty on national TV? What does that make me’?â€
But perhaps most damningly, Michael Cohen from the New America Foundation said of Olbermann,
At least [Fox News's Sean] Hannity and [Bill] O’Reilly engage with the other side (if mainly just to yell at them). Olbermann is just an echo chamber.
Keithers must be devastated. If MSNBC can’t find anybody to go on suicide watch because everybody hates him, maybe they can install one of those baby monitors near his bathtub, where a bawling Olbermann is certain to be nestled for the next several weeks.
Oh yeah– as if to compound his misery, now everybody also knows Keith Olbermann was not invited to participate in Journolist. Hundreds of members– journalists, professors, the liberal intellectual elite– and no room for the lockstep ideological cohort who hosts a nightly, primetime show on a major cable news network? (Olbermann must feel betrayed by Journolist contributor and frequent guest on “Countdown With Keith Olbermann,” Chris Hayes.)

UPDATE: Ed Morrissey has more.
Rachel Maddow strikes again. Even if MSNBC’s viewership dropped to three people plus Rachel Maddow’s DVR’ing of herself, it would still bother me that anyone spouts this racially divisive garbage.
The crux of her argument is that conservative politicians (and of course now Fox News) create a fear of minorities among stupid, racist white people who are evidently so prevalent in this country as to create a powerful political base. She asserts that this group of stupid white racists have been tricked into believing that civil rights are a zero sum equation, and that whites lose civil rights when equal treatment is given to minorities.
Of course she does not seem to grasp the irony of her argument. “You must hate and fear the conservative racists who are using the politics of hatred and fear to manipulate the people!”. Right. In any case this glimpse into the dark abyss of racial propaganda is arguably worth watching for educational purposes.
From the Organizing For America email:
The passage of Wall Street reform is at the forefront of the change we seek, and it will provide a foundation for a stronger and safer economy. It is a foundation built upon the progress of the Recovery Act, which has turned 22 months of job losses into six consecutive months of private-sector job growth. And it is a foundation reinforced by the historic health reform we passed this spring, which is already giving new benefits to more than 100 million Americans, ushering another 1 million Americans into coverage by next year.
And this just in from the People’s Office Of Propaganda (POOP):Â All future recessions are entirely the fault of white racists.

The National Enquirer reports that two additional message therapists claim they were abused by Al Gore. The following incident allegedly took place at a Beverly Hills hotel when Al Gore was in town for the Oscars–
“The therapist claimed that when they were alone, Gore shrugged off a towel and stood naked in front of her.
“He pointed at his erect penis and ordered her, ‘Take care of THIS.’“
From David Harsanyi at Reason–
With midterm elections approaching, President Barack Obama has gone on the charm offensive, claiming Republicans are demonstrating a “lack of faith in the American people.”
“Faith” often is defined as “having confidence or trust in a person or thing.” In this case, though, faith means adding another $35 billion in unemployment benefits to the infinite intergenerational tab—sometimes referred to as the budget—and mailing out as many checks as possible before Election Day.
Yet the jab is revealing in other ways. To begin with, what mysterious brand of public policy has Obama employed that exemplifies this sacred trust between public officials and the common citizen?
This Michael Moore hasn’t yet discovered bacon cheeseburgers, but he has discovered liberal illogic and self-righteousness.
