"Hilarious." – Daniel Hannan

WMD redux – we've been here before…

with one comment

An American president is speaking to the UN, suggesting stronger sanctions against a middle eastern country to curtail their production of weapons of mass destruction.  I’m sure the West will soon demand that the IAEA be given access to the facilities… Hans Blix – go get ‘em!  Sound familiar at all?

This time the middle eastern regime is question is more aggresive, having stated the destruction of Israel as one of their highest priorities.  This time our president is less aggressive, less decisive, and much more willing to seek a solution through the “strongly worded sanctions” and other worthless platitudes of the United Nations.

It would be an interesting case study in the effectiveness of American foreign policy but for two things:

  1. The political leaders of America don’t seem to learn from our own history.  It seems impossible to guarantee that allowing an international nuclear disaster would make us any wiser in the future.  We ought to have learned from the rise of Hitler that “there’s no way that could happen!” is not an appropriate foreign policy.  The Iranian regime is crazy, utterly ideological, arming themselves with nuclear weapons, and entirely bent on the destruction of Israel.
  2. Treating this as a “teachable moment” for Obama, as he wastes month after month cajoling the UN for one useless sanction after another, will only end in Iran producing nuclear weapons or else the responsibility for actually preventing disaster will fall solely on the shoulders of the Israelis.  I’m starting to wonder if Obama will even let them through the US airspace in Iraq.

Something very important to remember about human history:  bad shit happens.  Seriously.  There is such a thing as evil, and we must prevent its agents on this Earth from acquiring nuclear weapons.

  1. How does Obama make Iran stop its nuclear weapons program?

    Q: Who's afraid of Obama?

    A: Our allies.
