"Hilarious." – Daniel Hannan

Adam Smith on the folly of interventionalist statesmen

with one comment

The statesman who should attempt to direct private people in what manner they ought to employ their capitals would not only load himself with a most unnecessary attention, but assume an authority which could safely be trusted, not only to no single person, but to no council or senate whatever, and which would nowhere be so dangerous as in the hands of a man who had folly and presumption enough to fancy himself fit to exercise it.

Many modern American politicians could be aptly described as presumptive statesmen who fancy themselves fit to tinker with a mind-boggling array of issues.  Some things our politicians consider themselves intelligent enough to interfere in:  domestic and international financial markets, the healthcare system, the automobile industry, addictions and behavior (smoking, overeating), the amount of water that should flush through your toilet…

And the number one most hilarious thing the government thinks it should meddle with - the weather.  I’m not a constitutional scholar, but I do know that attempting to control a perceived rise in global temperature is not one of the responsibilities of government outlined in our constitution.  Whether it’s global warming or global cooling that the planet is currently suffering from right now, be assured that whichever way “climate change” takes us, the boys in the backroom (our brilliant politicians) will be there to cool down the planet.  Or warm it.

  1. That is a great quote. Reminds me of this one from Justice Louis Brandeis:

"The greatest dangers to liberty lurk in insidious encroachment by men of zeal, well-meaning but without understanding."
